Chapter Five
IT FELT LIKE A BLACK Friday rush on a tech store the day the limited exhibit opened. I didnât know how the word got out, but it certainly seemed to. There were more people than I had ever seen at the museum before. A lot of the town came out in support, but a decent number of the people there I had never seen before. More than a few people were even dressed up for the occasion and were wearing cloaks, witch hats and even carrying around brooms. A few of those people were a lot older than I would have expected to see in costume, but some were more adorable young kids running around. I guess witches and magic sold tickets a lot more than the Civil War history did. Even Amber was trying to help out.
âI canât believe the turn out,â Amber said out of breath. She wasnât used to dealing with this many people and I could see how exhausted she was. Despite this, I had to admit that she was taking it like a champ. She even seemed excited about the popularity of the exhibit. She hadnât done any of the hard work for it, but I appreciated that she cared about it.
âItâs pretty incredible,â I responded with a smile, despite my normal feelings of distaste for Amber. âThis weekend and the anniversary celebration should mean that we are set for the rest of the year.â I didnât know much about the back end of the museum, but I knew enough. There had been more than a couple times when we faced closing for good.
âThatâs good to hear,â Amber replied before getting mobbed by another group of tourists. Becky had been in a slightly better mood than she'd been before.
âI just canât wait to share everything with him,â she confided in me before work started. âI feel so bad for lying to him.â Becky worried about the response he might have. It wasnât exactly the easiest information to digest. To find out that your girlfriend was a witch and so was just about everyone you knew.
âIâm sure he'll understand,â I assured her. âIt wasnât like you wanted to keep anything from him. Jimmy Jack would understand that Fang asked you to keep him out of things.â I was sure he would be understanding, even if it was a lot of information to take in.
âI hope so,â Becky said with a sigh. âI also hope that Fang actually told him. Thereâs no guarantee of that.â It was true that we had no way of knowing if Fang would have told Jimmy Jack or not. He was determined to keep Jimmy Jack away from magic. I wouldnât put it past the old grump to have hunkered down and kept up the book club lie. Even with the possible worry of how Jimmy Jack was going to take the news, Becky was in a considerably better mood. She was even enjoying the influx of tourists.
âYou handling things okay?â I asked her just in case.
